I've seen a few kitchens that were refaced when the cabinets only had a year or two of life left in them, and would have to be replaced soon anyway. Making sure the cabinets are solid before refacing them is critical to saving money, and not prolonging the inevitable. Some discount cabinets are total junk and would be worse than just refacing what you already have. Just because the cabinets are new doesn't mean they are a good idea. It is actually amazing what "a lick of paint" can do! It is turning out to be cost effective, especially when you consider that replacing the cabinets would mean pulling out the tile counters and redoing the backsplash.
