I have seen quite a few re-facing jobs lately that look just about as good as a brand new kitchen. You certainly can get some good bang for your buck!

Refacing cabinets can gain you quite a few extra years of usability from your existing cabinets, but like Craig said, only if the cabinets are in good condition. I've seen a few kitchens that were refaced when the cabinets only had a year or two of life left in them, and would have to be replaced soon anyway. Making sure the cabinets are solid before refacing them is critical to saving money, and not prolonging the inevitable.

Some discount cabinets are total junk and would be worse than just refacing what you already have. Just because the cabinets are new doesn't mean they are a good idea.

If you got a fairly up to date kitchen design, and the cupboards are still solid and not falling apart, as the cheap veneered chipboard ones tend to do, then this is definitely a great cost saver. It is actually amazing what "a lick of paint" can do!

We're doing our reface job on a clients home right now. It is turning out to be cost effective, especially when you consider that replacing the cabinets would mean pulling out the tile counters and redoing the backsplash. You add in all these costs and new cabinets is a LOT more.

It is amazing how much bang for your buck you can get but refacing a kitchen. For the dollar spent you will see one of the best returns possible when you go to sell your home. Most people do not even realize that this is a viable option.

The price variances for kitchen units is amazing, and many people have no concept of what they are looking at until it is too late and they have their heart set on a specific look only to find that the option is just not in the price bracket they are in. In these kinds of situations, and perhaps even when a replacement option can be afforded, it is a great idea to have surfaces refaced by a professional. Great information.
Cheers
